How the process works
A work visa is not one document; it is a sequence of coordinated actions by the employee, employer and public authorities.
Choose the right procedure
“Work visa in Cyprus” is a common name for the process that allows a foreign employee to relocate and work legally. In practice, it is important to distinguish the basis for entry from a residence permit with the right to work. They solve different issues: being able to cross the border does not itself mean that you may start working.
Start with citizenship, current immigration status and the employer. EU citizens follow a different registration route. If you are a non-EU national but already have status in Cyprus, check which rights it gives you: a new permit is not required in every situation. This guide focuses primarily on employing third-country nationals.
| Procedure | When it is considered | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| General Employment — GEN | Employment under the general route | Which employer approvals are needed for this role |
| Company of foreign interests — BCS | Employment of a qualifying specialist by a registered company | Company status and the employee’s compliance with the criteria |
For the BCS high-paid employment category, the policy provides for a gross monthly salary of at least €2,500, relevant education or at least two years of relevant experience, and an employment contract of at least two years. “Gross” means before deductions. A labour-market test is not conducted for this category; support staff are subject to different rules. Migration Department criteria.
If you do not yet have an employer, start with a job offer. Preparing translations does not replace an employment contract or the company’s participation in the process. Blue Card, seasonal employment and other special categories have separate conditions.
Agree the actions with your employer
Ask HR or a manager to confirm the procedure under which you will be employed. Descriptions such as “international company” or “foreign owner” are not enough on their own. For BCS, the employer must appear in the relevant register; new companies are registered in advance through the Business Support Center. Company requirements.
Under the general route, the employer confirms whether hiring approval from the Department of Labour is required. The public service provides applications for several groups of positions, including skilled and unskilled roles. Application for employment of a foreign employee. Personal documents can be prepared in parallel once the category is confirmed.
Before signing the contract, compare the job title, duties, salary, employment duration and intended start date. Agree who pays for translations, medical examinations, insurance and government fees. If the company covers only part of the costs, ask for that list in writing so you can budget accurately.
Appoint one contact person on the employer’s side. Give that person the question list and agree the document exchange process. If several employees are relocating, keep a separate file for each person: a shared corporate folder must not replace individual forms, signatures and certificates.
Collect documents step by step
Do not begin with a generic internet checklist. The official list depends on the category and application type: entry, first application, change of status or renewal. For BCS, use the forms and supporting documents section; for general employment, use the GEN page. The preparation framework below must be checked against the selected official list.
The employee’s personal file
- Passport. Prepare legible copies of the required pages. Check validity before ordering other documents: a short remaining validity period may require a new passport and changes to forms already completed.
- Employment contract and proof of qualifications. Gather the signed contract, CV, diploma or evidence of experience where required. Experience certificates should make the employment period and connection between duties and the future role clear.
- Police clearance certificate. Confirm the country of issue based on citizenship and actual residence. Check the permitted age of the certificate, original format and certification method before ordering it.
- Medical documents. Obtain the list of examinations for your precise application. A general “fit to work” certificate does not replace documents that meet immigration requirements, including how results are confirmed in Cyprus.
- Insurance and address. Prepare the required evidence of medical cover and accommodation, for example a tenancy agreement. Match the insured person’s name, policy period and conditions to the application.
- Immigration documents. If you are already on the island, include entry information, your current permit and previous applications when required for the chosen route.
Company documents
The employer prepares corporate confirmations and approvals for its category, signs forms and provides required undertakings or insurance documents. Ask HR to check that corporate data are current: the full legal name, registration number, address and signatory must match throughout the file.
Organising the collection
Create a five-column table: document, who obtains it, issue date, whether translation is required and whether the original is ready. Note the permitted use period for every certificate. This shows which document holds up the file and what may expire before the appointment.
Scan pages in full, including reverse sides, seals and annexes. Use clear file names such as “Passport”, “Contract” and “Police clearance”. Do not crop margins or substitute scans with glare-filled photographs. Keep originals separately and confirm in advance which will remain with the authority.
Check translation and certification
Both the content of a document and the way it is formalised matter for filing. Foreign documents may require an official translation and certification. GEN supporting-document requirements. An apostille or other legalisation confirms a document’s origin, while translation conveys its content: neither procedure replaces the other.
Do not automatically order apostilles for the entire file. Exemption from legalisation depends on the country, type of document and applicable agreement. Russian documents also require a case-by-case check: an exemption mentioned in a consultant’s letter does not establish the same regime for every certificate and copy.
Before translation, send the specialist the complete document with all certification endorsements and state the receiving authority. Where necessary, the source document is certified first and the complete file is then translated. Check an existing translation before ordering it again: the issue may be a missing page or an inconsistency in a name.
Pay particular attention to transliteration of surname and given name, dates of birth, organisation names and numbers. If your surname has changed, prepare the document linking the old and new spelling. CY Translation can check the consistency of the file and arrange a sworn translation in a format suitable for filing.
Practical tip: send documents for a preliminary review before paying for certification and delivery of originals. It is usually easier to correct the order at this stage than to remake the entire file before a scheduled appointment.
Agree entry before buying tickets
Under the GEN route, an entry permit is normally arranged first, although some categories have exceptions. GEN entry rules. The entry route for high-paid employees of companies of foreign interests differs: the appropriate visa or an entry permit based on the employer’s application may be used. BCS entry and application procedure.
Ask for the exact route to be confirmed for your passport and reason for relocation. A tourist or Schengen visa should not be treated as a universal authorisation to work. If you are already in Cyprus, provide your entry date and the end of your authorised stay: the possibility of changing status is checked before filing, not after current documents expire.
Agree a realistic arrival date with HR and the specialist preparing the application. Allow time for local documents, examinations, insurance and personal attendance. Before travelling, check that you have the originals and that the contact person knows your arrival date and is ready to provide the corporate part of the file.
Keep a separate travel folder with the passport, entry document, employer contacts and accommodation address. Paper copies and a digital backup help you find essential information quickly. Do not carry the only copy of an important certificate solely in checked luggage.
File the application and provide biometrics
Before visiting, check the current form, signatures, supporting documents, fees and whether an appointment is needed. The official GEN page provides for an application for entry, residence and work at the Migration Department in Nicosia; biometrics can be given at filing or later at the district police unit for the area of residence. Official filing procedure. For BCS, check the guidance for the applicable category.
Support can prepare the file and organise filing, but personal attendance is required for biometrics. Bring the passport, originals from the list, copies and appointment confirmation where applicable. Confirm in advance who will bring employer documents and how fees are paid.
Before handing over the application, check the postal address, telephone number and email once again. After filing, keep the receipt, application number and a copy of the submitted file. Record any additional documents requested, where to send them and by when. Add verbal comments to your action list immediately.
If an additional-document request arrives, first compare it with what was already submitted. A newer certificate, original instead of a copy or clarification of data may be needed. Send an organised response: state the case number and list the attachments so they can be correctly added to the application.
Employment start date: agree it for your category with the employer and responsible specialist. A signed contract, appointment booking or tourist visa alone does not confirm the right to start work.
Plan time limits and costs
Separate the calendar for document preparation from the application-processing period. For BCS, official policy provides for a one-month processing period, but this is not the timeline for the whole relocation. Policy for companies of foreign interests. Obtaining certificates, corrections, appointments and requests for additional material may extend the overall time.
Do not apply another company’s promise of “two weeks” to your own application. Clarify from which event the period is counted: receipt of scans, provision of originals or acceptance of a complete application. Plan the employment start date with HR and leave a reserve for actions controlled by public authorities.
| Cost item | What it depends on |
|---|---|
| Support | Category, number of applicants, entry or renewal, preparation scope |
| Government fees | Application type, first registration and permit duration |
| Translation and certification | Language, volume, document type and required format |
| Other costs | Examinations, insurance, certificates and delivery |
CY Translation’s service fee is agreed after the source information is checked. Ask for included work, additional costs and applicable VAT to be listed separately. Do not use old publications with one “work visa price” as a budget: the process may include several independent payments.
For an urgent project, tell us the deadline and why it is urgent in advance. We will identify actions that can be done in parallel and agree the timetable for our work. Faster translation preparation does not mean a faster Migration Department decision.
Check the permit and next steps
After receiving the card, check personal data, validity period and permit conditions. Compare them with the application and contract. If an error is found, keep a copy of the card and clarify the correction procedure immediately. Do not postpone the check until the first trip or renewal.
Plan renewal preparation well in advance. Keep the contract, employment confirmations, insurance documents, correspondence and receipts together. When changing employer, role or basis of residence, first clarify whether a new application is needed and which deadlines apply; an old file cannot automatically be used for a new situation.
Before travelling abroad, especially while an application is still pending, check the documents needed to return and any limits on absence. Conditions of a temporary permit should be considered for long business trips and remote work from another country. BCS residence and return conditions.
If your family is relocating, tell us at the start of preparation. A spouse and children require their own applications and proof of relationship; the employee’s status does not arrange them automatically. Use the official family-reunification section. Check surnames in certificates, passports and translations before ordering the complete family file.
Keep a final action list for every family member: which documents to obtain, who is responsible for translation and when personal attendance will be required. This is particularly helpful if relatives arrive on different dates. CY Translation can structure the preparation and filing support around your situation.
