Cypriot government requirements regarding certification

In most cases, a sworn translation (PIO) is required when submitting documents to Cypriot government bodies. This is an official translation accepted without further certification. Such translations are required by the Migration Department, the Cyprus Road Department, the Ministry of the Interior, and other government agencies. In most cases, when you submit documents to the Cypriot authorities, a sworn translation (PIO) is required. This is an official translation that does not require further certification.

many requirements set by Cypriot government bodies specify that translations must be in Greek or English.

*Please note that certified translations (PIO) must ALWAYS be carried out from or into Greek, as required by law.

This means that a certified translation cannot be produced directly from a foreign language into English. Therefore, when you order a sworn translation into English, you are effectively paying for two translations: one from the foreign language into Greek and another from Greek into English.

In most cases, this is unnecessary and only leads to extra costs. A translation into Greek is sufficient for submitting documents to the Cypriot authorities.

Where is a certified translation required?

Cyprus Migration Department

as a general rule, translations carried out by a sworn translator registered with the Cyprus Register of Sworn Translators (PIO) are accepted.

GESY

Cyprus National Healthcare System

when submitting documents for registration with the GESY system, confirmation of insurance status or the issuance of medical cards, foreign documents must be accompanied by an official sworn translation.

Cyprus Road Department

To replace a foreign driving licence, you must provide an official, certified translation.

University of Cyprus

academic documents (school reports, diplomas and certificates) usually need to be translated into Greek or English. While the university generally accepts our company-certified translations, we recommend checking the requirements directly with the institution to avoid any misunderstandings.

When registering a marriage, the Cyprus municipalities

generally require foreign documents (such as birth certificates, certificates of no impediment to marriage and divorce certificates) to be accompanied by an officially certified translation. for property transactions (purchases, gifts or wills), foreign documents (such as powers of attorney and title deeds) usually require an official translation certified by a sworn translator. In some cases, a sworn statement (affidavit) is also accepted.

the competent authority in the Republic of Cyprus responsible for recognising higher education qualifications and officially recognising foreign academic documents (such as diplomas, degrees and certificates) accepts translations certified by sworn translators registered in the Republic of Cyprus.
